What is a Maine Coon cat?
The Maine Coon is the American oldest natural longhaired breed of cats. It’s a native of the State of Maine
and a cat that associates his large size to his calm and sweet temperament, so they are called the “gentle giants”.
He’ s large in size, with a frontal ruff, a long and lush tail, a square muzzle and big tufted ears with lynx-tips
He is curious, coexists well with other animals and enjoys human company which leads us to say that he is the most "dog" natured of cats.
His silky coat, longer on the belly and tail is easily groomed and does not require special care.
The Maine Coons and us
The Maine Coons have seduced us, first for their imposing and wild look and later for their calm, sweet
and playful temperament. It started with one, then another and one more... that is how we have become enthusiastic breeders
and are we are showing our cats at Fife, Portuguese affiliated cat Club CPF and, when possible CFA shows.
We live in Lisbon; our cats live at home with us, two Basset Hounds, and a street cat. We think the best way to breed cats
it's in small groups, in a familiar environment. They usually walk around the all house, the male has is own space, but
there are no cages. They work out their hunting techniques with flies on a big covered terrace and the babies are born
in our room, well watched and used to human contact since day One.
They are used to play with children and are adapted to all the usual household sounds, which is important for a perfect
socialization of the kittens that should start soon, since they are two weeks old. We want to guarantee the Maine Coon
characteristic balanced and sweet temperament.
To our breeding program, we chose animals from show lines with prized ancestors but also less used foundation and outcross
lines. Our goal is, of course, to breed beautiful cats but mainly to give our contribution to the enlargement of the genetic
heritage and the healthy development of the breed in the long term.
The same concerns about the health of our cats and their offspring lead us to assure a serious health program, testing for
most common diseases. All of them have been tested for Felv and Fiv before joining the group and, at the proper age for HCM
(echocardiogram and DNA test), PKD and Hip Displasia.
Kittens go to their new homes when they are about twelve weeks old, and they have been vaccinated, dewormed, micro-chipped
and, of course, all with their pedigree, confirming their ascendants.
We thank all breeders who have supported and trusted us with their wonderful cats and interested us to learn about responsible
breeding, in the best interest of these cats.
